Two new biosafety self-paced learning modules on public access to biosafety information and public participation in decision-making regarding LMOs are available in the new e-Learning Platform.
Biodiversity e-Learning Platform: The platform provides a one-stop access to e-modules and courses relating to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing.
This course was developed jointly by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Customs Organization (WCO). It comprises five modules, which provide the necessary foundation for Customs Officers to understand and enforce the requirements of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety regarding the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms. The course can take around 3 hours to complete.
Introduction to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. Upon completion of this module, the Customs officer will be able to: Explain what the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety; Explain what are some of the concerns associated with living modified organisms; Identify the three main categories of living modified organisms regulated under the Protocol.
The Protocol’s requirements for the handling, transport, packaging and identification of LMOs, Upon completion of this module, the Customs officer will: Be familiar with the identification and documentation requirements for the three categories of LMOs; Understand how identification requirements can be included in existing types of shipping documentation; Be able to recognize an LMO unique identifier and an LMO Quick-link.
The role of Customs authorities under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, Upon completion of this lesson, the Customs officer will be able to answer the question: What are the three roles of Customs officers when a shipment containing LMOs arrives at a port of entry?
Methods for Detecting, Identifying and Quantifying Living Modified Organisms, Upon completion of this lesson, the Customs officer will: Understand the reasons why countries may wish to test for LMOs in a shipment; Be able to identify the two main approaches to detecting LMOs; Be familiar with some of the strengths and weaknesses to protein-based testing methods versus DNA-based testing methods.
Access to and exchange of information on LMOs through the Biosafety Clearing-House, Upon completion of this module, the Customs officer will be able to have a basic understanding for the BCH website and its features.
